Yesterday afternoon, a neighbor stopped by with a fascinating creature - a regal moth caterpillar, also known as the hickory horned devil. These caterpillars are 12.5 - 14 cm in length, and as an adult moth have a wingspan of 9.5 - 15.5 cm. The caterpillar burrows for pupation, so it was a rare treat to see this since its size indicated that it was ready for that stage.

we found a regal moth caterpillar in abington too! couldn't believe how large it was (and kind of scary looking).
